Exercise

Having asthma should not prevent you from exercising regularly; as long as you use your inhaler correctly and before any vigorous exercise.

If your child has asthma, encourage them to take part in sports activities at school. Where necessary, make time to speak to school teachers / club organisers and reassure them that, as long as your child has taken their medication and has their asthma under control, there's no reason for them not to engage in sporting activities.

Some forms of exercise that can be particularly beneficial for patients with asthma include:

  • Yoga: breathing techniques help with lung function and asthma control
  • Swimming: the warm, humid environment in the pool is unlikely to trigger asthma symptoms (although for some people the chemicals used in the swimming pool may be a trigger).
  • Walking: low-impact way of building more physical activity into your lifestyle.
Speak to your GP or Practice Nurse for more information on the role exercise can play in asthma management and for more advice on simple lifestyle changes that can improve fitness.
